L'hiver, en Hollande, tous les enfants patinent. Albertine est désolée : ses patins ne lui vont plus.

Comme depuis plusieurs jours la mer était recouverte de glace, mes frères m'ont proposé d'aller voir nos cousins dans l'île de Marken.

Une fois la ville traversée et passé le port, nous vîmes ( 2 ) la mer gelée qui s'étendait devant nous.
Once we crossed the city and passed the port, we saw the frozen sea stretched out in front of us.
Le va-et-vient ( 3 ) des patineurs et des traîneaux y avait tracé une piste menant droit à l'horizon!
The coming and going of skaters and sleds had traced a path leading right on the horizon!
Le vent soufflait. La glace était ondulée et rugueuse.( 4 ) Nous avancions péniblement.
The wind was blowing. The ice was rigid and rough. We were going forward rather difficultty.
Cette route sans fin me semblait longue... longue...
The endless road seemed long...very long to me...
Des traîneaux à cheval nous croisaient et des voiliers à patins nous dépassaient à une vitesse vertigineuse ( 5 ) !

Passing through the ice tunnel, we found the sea deserted. The north wind, filled with a bit of snow, blew with fury.
Très vite, les flocons tombèrent plus denses ( 15 ), nous piquant le visage.
Very quickly, the snowflakes fell more thickly, stinging our face.
La piste s'effaçait peu à peu et des rafales de neige nous cachaient l'horizon.
The track faded away, little by little, and the gusts of snow hid the horizon from us.

But suddenly, they slowed down, and I got scared and cried “ That’s it! We are lost on the frozen sea”.
«Tu rêves ? » m'a demandé mon frère Yan tout étonné. J'ai ouvert les yeux, la ville était devant nous.
“Are you dreaming?” asked my brother Yann completely surprised. I opened my eyes and the city was in front of us.
Il ne neigeait presque plus, et nous avancions calmement sur une glace bien lisse entre les coques ( 20 ) des grands navires, ceux qui traversent les océans...
It was almost no longer snowing, and we calmly advanced on the very smooth ice between the hulls of the great ships, those which cross the oceans…
